History: Jannick was born sometime in the last decade of the 1600s in Holstebro, Denmark to Anders and Birgitte. With seven brothers and sisters, not including himself, for his parents to take care of, also not including his siblings whom died in childbirth or in their first few years of life, his father took whatever work he could. More often than naught it was some form of servanthood in which Jannick grew to look down upon. He grew up watching his father always taking orders from someone else, never standing up for his own beliefs, sacrificing his years for undeserving fools and for the welfare of his wife and children. Jannick vowed to never live the life his father was burdened with; the life of a man who never said no and always obeyed rules.
When Jannick turned fourteen he left home and found passage on a Danish ship called the Hjordis, meaning the "sword goddess." He learned all he could and fell in love with the sea and all the foreign port towns they made berth in. After a few years of being a part of the crew of the Hjordis, he began to see the similarities in his life to his father's. He was taking orders, something he never wanted to do.
As it would happen, the rest of the crew wasn't all that keen on the current captain, so they mutinied him and placed the first mate at the helm, one Hector Barbossa. However, that didn't last long where Jannick was concerned. He didn't care much for the slightly older pirate and he began to "woo" the rest of the crew in his favor to mutiny against Barbossa. Unfortunately, Barbossa found out the plan and a fight broke out between the pair on ship.
The older pirate received a piercing wound to his right shoulder whereas and it is then that Stryder received nary a scratch. However, the younger pirate lost the fight and was forced to walk the plank. Always having been an excellent swimmer, Jannick swam as far as he could in the cold waters of the Atlantic where he was left. Eventually though he grew tired but the Fates were smiling upon him, for a merchant vessel was sailing by and picked him up.
The ship made port in Lisbon, Portugal and Jannick turned to petty thieving here and there to make some coin, but finding passage on another ship soon enough. It was then that he met up with a pirate about his age, Jack Sparrow. The pair became fast friends...well, as friendly as two pirates could be. They sailed, plundered towns and caroused together for a few years until a certain lady caught the eye of Jannick Stryder.
Her name was Neema and she was a beautiful Egyptian girl he fell completely in love with. After a few weeks of being stuck in port while the ship was being repaired after a bad storm, he convinced Neema to run away with him and for them to marry. But it was only a few days later that Jannick found Neema in bed with Jack. Distraught and infuriated, he challenged Jack to a duel of sorts and the pair took the fight outside into the streets. Jannick won this one, but resigned not to kill the man, instead responding with, "There is no more friendship between us. If I ever have the honor of seeing your face again, I will do everything and anything within my means to make you suffer the way I suffer now."
He never saw Jack after that night.
Jannick left the ship he'd been sailing alongside Jack with and found new passage on a British ship called Aurora. The name struck a chord in Jannick; it spoke to him and drew him in like a moth to a flame. He fell in love with the ship. So much so, that he even found himself working with a decent crew who he called his family, despite them all being dirty, smelly, cheating, ready-to-stab-you-in-the-back scoundrels. In a few years time, he earned their trust, as well as the Captain's and within a few months time, he rallied a mutiny against said Captain, and was finally out from under the thumb of ever taking orders.
At the first signs of disloyalty amongst what was now his own crew, he marooned them, or simply killed them. Sure he was no better than the men who more or less indentured his father, but at least he wasn't his father.
For more than ten years he's captained the Aurora, is a fierce man with a sharp tongue and a rough exterior, but at heart he is still just a man he shares all the deep down dreams, desires and cravings that any other man wants.
And he's still waiting for that day to stick it to Jack Sparrow.
