When she was of age, Catherine was betrothed to a silversmith named Mark Edward Rowlings who was a ladykiller, but gentleman
at heart. She was quite taken with his free spirit and need to leave the restrictions the new world was developing and when they
were married, he proposed the idea of relocating to the Caribbean. She agreed and travel was fine, until their ship was caught in
the midst of a tropical storm and capsized. By the grace of God, or simple good fortune, a long boat that wasn't destroyed in the
process, and was full of a handful of survivors, pulled Catherine from the turbulent sea as the storm died down. And to Catherine's
horror and grief, her husband's body was never recovered amongst the floating debris which was all that was left of the ship. He
was lost to Davy Jones' locker.

The first and closest port the long boat made it to, was that of Tortuga. Luckily having a small pouch of money on her person, Catherine
rented a small room at an inn where she wallowed in her loss for a few weeks before accepting her husband's demise and knowing
he'd want her to move on and live life. With no means to support herself and with her funds running out, she sent a letter home to
her parents in Virginia Colony and while she waited for any response she went looking for work at a wigmakers only to be denied.
And it was during one of her trips around the harbor town that an aging 'lady of the evening' saw the desperation and hope in Catherine;
and approached her. In said desperation, Catherine readily welcomed being taken under the wing of the respected Madame and admired
how she was a whore, but controlled her own life and who her clientele were. More like a courtesan, than a common prostitute. And the
older woman saw Catherine as a promising lady of the evening; something to draw men in that wanted more than a simple lay for a night.

A drunk man will sleep with any woman, but the allure of a lady...that was the greater temptation.
When the old Madame took ill and soon passed on from syphilis, Catherine found herself surprised to learn she'd been left the 'business' and
that she was now in charge of the girls (i.e., Giselle and Scarlett). She ran the establishment, which she renamed the Golden Sail Inn; which
was complete with tavern and lodging. And she made her own rules. She made a percentage off her girls; like a pimp of modern days, but
treated them well; made sure they were fed, clothed and taken care of. And she never had to sleep with a man. Unless she chose too.

Now a little more than ten years later, her 'business' is still prospering and her reputation is commendable; not something you'd find in Tortuga;
which his why she's been referred to as the Madame of Tortuga, because everyone knows the name Catherine Johns.
